Travellers and activities

Kauai for beach lovers

Your dreamed days about heavenly beaches are here! The beaches in Kauai boast long stretches of white sand, crystal clear turquoise waters and stunning tropical backdrops making them the ideal and picture-perfect beaches to go to. When choosing a beach always check the weather report if you want to go swimming and surfing as they can be exposed to strong waves, unpredictable conditions and rip currents. Enjoy the North Shore beaches of Anini Beach Park, Haena Beach Park and Ke'e Beach. The first one is great for sunsets and for a relaxing day by the ocean. Anini is protected by a huge coral reef and it’s a great spot for surf beginners, and the latter is a good spot for snorkelling. The East Side beaches are the ones providing the safest swimming conditions. You can go to the family-friendly Lydgate Beach Park, Lydgate Pond, Leakia Beach Park or Kalapaki Beach. On the South Shore, Poipu Beach is the most popular one. The west side of the island has some tide pools near Hanapepe and the favourite spot for local surf in Kekaha Beach.

Kauai for hiking lovers

Kauai is home to Waimea Canyon, known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. For about 10 miles and up to 3,000 feet (900m) ridges and cliffs, this natural canyon of red soil has a unique geologic history and it provides several hiking trails along the NaPali coastline. The views from the top are just breathtaking. The Awa'awapuhi Trail is the first one we recommend, followed by the Makawehi Lithified Cliffs Trail on the South Shore. The Nounou East or Sleeping Giant trail takes you to the central/eastern part of the island with stunning views. An easy trail is the Kuilau Ridge Trail ideal for families and kids. The Kalalau Trail known for many as the "Hanakapiai Trail" is a scenic 11-mile route stretching along the NaPali coastline, starting at Kee Beach. On the west side, there is the strenuous but rewarding Nualolo trail that is recommended to do it as a loop combined with Awa'awapuhi Trail. This is a full-day hike that will test your endurance. It’s not for the heart-fainted!

Did you know the building code of the island does not allow buildings higher than a palm tree? There is a four-storey limit on vertical edifications!

2. Kauai, a romantic destination

Need some time away from the hustle and bustle of the city? Come to Kauai and go for a nice stroll along the beach, and maybe a hand-in-hand hike into Waimea Canyon? Take in the dazzling beauty of the botanical gardens, sail away for the day and admire the towering Napali Coast. Book a table for two for a romantic dinner with ocean views by the candle light. Unwind on the beach, sunbathe, read and pamper your soul, body and mind having a relaxing massage at a spa. You will feel rejuvenated! But the most romantic is walking barefoot on the sand to meet your loved one by the shore and tie the knot.

3. Go to the markets

The fresh local produce you can have at the restaurants can be found at Kauai’s markets where farmers sell their produce. Get some foodie gifts and treats including fruit pies, honey, jams, and flavoured macadamia nuts. In Hanalei there is Hale Halawai Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings and in Poipu, the Kukuiula Kauai Culinary Market takes place on Wednesday evenings from 3.30pm to 6pm. A selection of fruit, vegetables and ready to eat food.

4. Master the waves and ride like a pro

Kauai is a grooming ground for surf lovers. The offshore winds, lots of wind swells and ground swells ensure that the island gets high surfs. To find the right location for surging will depend on what time of the year you travel to Kauai. In the summer, from May to October, the main surfing spot is clearly the South Shore whereas in the winter, it is the North Shore where wave riders take on the 30-40ft ocean swells! Expert surfers choose to go to Hanalei Bay, Kekaha Beach or Kealia Beach, also suitable for intermediate riders. Beginners and learners can choose from Kahili Beach, Rock Quarry and Kalapaki Beach. Enjoy the ride and check the weather forecast before heading to your surfing spot!

5. Kauai by air

The island’s lush green scenery together with the pristine beaches are a true feast for our senses. Sometimes we cannot really appreciate the breathtaking views standing on the shore or climbing a hill. We can get the idea but what about getting a completely different perspective of its geography?
