The town is set on the edge of gorgeous Merimbula Lake, and with its proximity to myriad awe-inspiring beaches, lakes, lagoons and several National Parks, it has attracted big-city tourists since the 1960s.

You can fly to Merimbula from both Melbourne and Sydney, and some people recommend this not for the time it saves but for the unforgettable views as you swoop into the town! Or why not take a charter flight for a bird's eye view of the coastline? The panoramic views over pristine oceanic and mountain wilderness constitute an experience you will not easily forget.

The dazzling sapphire blue waters which surround Merimbula are a haven for family-friendly watersports including fishing, swimming, canoeing, snorkelling, and much more. The town itself is just the right size for those who enjoy gentle walks or small hikes. The most popular is the Merimbula Boardwalk, which circumnavigates the lake and passes through mangrove forests and eucalyptus canopies. Don’t miss nearby Goodenia Rainforest, which offers lovely family friendly walks through mossy ferns.

The beaches of the Sapphire Coast come in all shapes and sizes, but all are naturally gorgeous, with crystal-clear waters, soft squeaky sand and lovely bushland. Merimbula’s Main Beach boasts five kilometres of All-Australian pristine sand where you can surf, fish, walk or just lounge under the sun. Perfect for families, it is patrolled during summer and even has an off-leash area for the family dog. The beach backs onto a scenic bush reserve where heathland and forest provide habitat for native animals and myriad walking opportunities.

Green Cape and South Head in the southern section of the Ben Boyd National Park are superb shore-based vantage points to spot whales. Alternatively, take one of the many boat tours out to sea to catch sight of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Located on a wharf with stunning sea views, Merimbula Aquarium brings you face-to-face with the region’s native sea creatures. With 28 tanks featuring local and tropical marine life of all kinds, the staff will enthusiastically tell you all about the lives of these fascinating animals. Top tip: fish feeding is on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 11.30 am!

Magic Mountain is an amusement park located just south of Merimbula which caters to young children and adults alike. The thrilling Doom Tube & Black Hole ride is many peoples’ favourite. Not for the faint-hearted, you plunge at high speed into pitch-black darkness before emerging with great relief into the sunlight!

Get up close and personal with Australian wildlife at Potoroo Palace, a conservation and education centre that is home to every native Australian animal out there, including the cutest of koalas and wombats. And then of course meet the potoroos themselves, a delightful marsupial the size of a cat. Feeling brave? You can pick up a snake and let it wrap around you for a photo op! No thanks.

Game fishing, bottom bouncing, rock and freshwater fishing – Merimbula has it all for fishing enthusiasts. The local lake has so many flatheads you are basically guaranteed to catch one for dinner, even if you are a total beginner!
