I swim and see dolphins many times a week, the reason I chose to live at Kealakekua Bay. The "Ohana"-guest apartment for rent is on the GROUND floor. It is completely separate from the two floors where I live upstairs. You can walk down the street to enter Kealakekua Bay where you swim in the nourishing crystalline blue water. Or walk 5 minutes the other direction to snorkel/swim, enjoy many species of marine fishes, turtles at Manini beach. Sleep to the lullaby of ocean waves. Two other beloved swim spots, Honaunau Bay is 10 minutes and County Park Ho'okena is 20 minutes drive away. My Oha...

Travellers and activities

Hawaii for beach buffs

It is no exaggeration that Hawaii is a beach filled paradise with a plethora of activities like wind surfing, kayaking and SUP to add to the mix. Go diving to see the lava tubes at Tunnels Beach. Next to Kalama Park visit Cove Beach Park and learn how to surf. Napili Bay is perfect for families with calm lapping waters safe for swimming and occasional turtle spotting. Oahu boasts its own conglomeration of beaches ranging from family-friendly swimming havens like Pokai Bay to surf competition beaches like Waimea Bay where you can watch the professionals surf til the sunset at peak season.

Hawaii for savvy travellers

Hawaii is a playground for incredible and unique things to do. Have a soak in the Queen’s Bath on Kauai Island. You’ll have to hike to get there, but the views are worth it. Just heed the caution signs. Another fantastic thing to do on Kauai is to kayak Hanalei Bay, which movie buffs may recognize from The Descendants. Another Hawaii must do is hiking on any number of the incredible trails. For something different, try the Pipiwai Trail through bamboo groves in Maui, or the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail for a beginner friendly coastal walk. So many choices!

Hawaii for leisure travellers

Boat tours, whale watching, scenic drives. There are so many ways to enjoy Hawaii. For a phenomenal low-key adventure, go on a snorkel tour with Malolo Molokini Snorkelling Charters to spot amazing marine life around an extinct volcano. Have a life changing cultural experience by participating in an authentic Luau. Old Lahaina Luau is recommended if you’re in Maui. Are you a road trip lover? Why not take a scenic road trip to Hana on Maui? This north to south coastal trail will take you through incredible forests, eucalyptus trees and stunning, unforgettable scenery.

Hawaii has been the backdrop for award winning films like Jurassic Park and is the birthplace of surfing.

Top 7 travel tips in Hawaii

1. Go wildlife spotting on Kauai Island

Head to the northwest of Kauai to discover the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park. You’ll be blown away by towering sea cliffs, gorgeous flora and fauna and breath-takingly narrow valleys with cascading waterfalls. While in the park you’ll experience all of this magical topography with walks along narrow footpaths.

2. Snorkel the tunnels at Makua

Ocean lovers couldn’t be more pleased by the treasures found beneath the surface of Makua’s waters at Tunnels Beach. As you snorkel or diver below the surface, you’ll see vibrant schools of tropical fish amid magical caverns for which this undersea paradise gets its name. You might even see a few sea turtles!

3. Get suited up for world-class zip lining

Hawaii is one of the best places in the world to experience zip lining through rainforests, pineapple fields and jagged mountain ranges. In Kauai, check out the largest zipline in the state, compliments of Outfitters Kauai. Or, if staying in Oahu, Book a 3-hour adventure with Climb Works for an adventure packed day.

4. Get a bird’s eye view of the islands

For panoramic views even your photographer friends will envy, aim for the skies with any one of the numerous helicopter tours available. Many of the tour operators will take you across Oahu, Big Island, Maui and Kauai. Be sure to take plenty of photos of the volcanos, craters and stunning jagged peaks Hawaii is famous for.

5. Discover ‘The Grand Canyon of the Pacific’

Explore one of Hawaii’s jewels with an adventure trek through the colourful, deep gorge of Waimea Canyon State Park. At the lookout you’ll catch panoramic views of crested buttes and rugged topography throughout the gorge. It’s easy to see how this park got its nickname!

6. Have an incredible adventure in Maui

There are so many ways to enjoy this jaw-droppingly gorgeous island. Rent a bike and cruise down a volcano. Bask in the sun on any one of the white or black beaches. Snorkel, swim, eat, drink and play. Or dive under a waterfall. Thrill seekers and leisure travellers are guaranteed to not get bored.

7. Visit the Hawaii museum on Oahu

One of the great things to do in Oahu to deepen your Hawaiian experience is to visit some of the museums. The Iolani Palace is highly recommended.
